DescriptionThis course will provide evidenced-based updates on the effects of exercise and physical therapy on the symptomatic management of Parkinson's disease (PD). Each therapist/trainer will be able to integrate this new knowledge along with teaching techniques to create and lead a comprehensive community-based PD specific exercise program based on the Delay the Disease fitness agenda. The therapists will select appropriate assessment tools and outcome measures for the evaluation of people living with PD. They will understand new methods for intake protocols, referral indicators, risk stratification, and class organization. The therapists will also be able to incorporate evidence based PD specific treatments into their practice. They will understand the importance of motivation, enthusiasm, optimism and methods of teaching. These methods will be used to design a fitness agenda to treat a specific symptom related to PD including bradykinesia, cognitive dysfunction and micrographia. Participants will demonstrate their understanding of these concepts by planning and implementing a short fitness agenda with a small group and be observed by instructors. In addition to the post assessment, each class participant will design a fitness agenda based on a PD symptom; return demonstration with partner work. A debriefing style of evaluation will be conducted with the learners following the sharing of their plan and implementation of a short fitness agenda. The assessment does not carry a pass/fail weight with the course, but rather the sharing of suggestions for ways to improve and recognition of what was done well.
